There are two written sermons required of all candidates in the Course of Study program. All sermons must be typed in good manuscript form and double-spaced. Please indicate outline divisions clearly and number the pages. The sermons should be four to six pages in length and written as nearly as possible as you would preach them.
These sermons are part of the following sections of the Course of Study:
• Admission On Trial: An expository sermon on “Repentance”.
• Ordination As Elder: An expository sermon on “Sanctification”.
The message should be doctrinal in content, not simply an exhortation. Utilize adequate biblical references to substantiate what the Bible says on these subjects. Employ the use of the homiletical principles taught in the Course of Study. After you have completed this assignment, send the sermon to the chairperson of the District Board of Ministerial Education for evaluation.
In the event the sermon is judged inadequate in any manner, the student will be asked to rewrite the message. In cases where there are questions regarding the doctrinal position of the student, the Chair reserves the right to meet with the student to discuss the matter.
The written sermons will become a permanent part of the student’s file. These sermons, as well as all portions of the student’s file, will be made available to the Board of Ministerial Relations upon the request of the Board.
May God bless you as you prayerfully prepare your sermons.
